The best 5 cafés in Oxford for freelancers

Freelancing can be thirsty work, so why not swap your office for a work-friendly café? Oxford isn’t short of coffee shops, so I’ve sussed out the ones with a Wi-Fi signal as strong the coffee so that you don’t have to.

5. Jericho Coffee Traders

Given that Jericho Coffee Traders has its own is a micro-roastery, it’s no surprise that they really know their coffee. The espresso bar on High Street has a cosy feel and is a great place to set up with a laptop and a latte.

4. G&D’s

G&D’s is the collective name for three cafes dotted around Oxford: George and Davis (Little Clarendon Street), George and Danver (St Aldate’s) and George and Delila (Cowley Road). All three specialise in homemade ice cream and baked goods. The ice cream is insanely good. If that alone isn’t enough to sway you, they also do a mean cappuccino and the Wi-Fi is pretty good. They’re also open until 12am every day – perfect for hitting those deadlines. The only real downside is that it can get pretty busy at peak times in all three.

3. The Bear and the Bean

A tiny coffeehouse wedged between a sushi restaurant and burrito shack on Cowley Road, The Bear and the Bean serves tasty coffee and has a solid Wi-Fi signal. It can be a problem getting a table though – given that there are only about five.

2. Gaf

This indie coffee joint is nestled between houses on Magdalen Road in East Oxford. Although it’s very small, it has a lovely bit of outside space perfect for al-fresco working on a sunny day. It also has a great brunch selection.

1. Rick’s Café

The laid-back Rick’s Café has more seats than most Oxford cafés so you’re probably more likely to get a pew here than any of the others. The coffee doesn’t disappoint and the food menu is distinctive with a range of sweet and savoury crêpes. There are nearly always other people working away – so you won’t be the only one sitting with a laptop.
